iPhone 8 Said to Feature Iris Scanner

Together with the discussion of Apple replacing the Touch ID sensor using an embedded version this past year, it is possible Apple is working to eliminate Touch ID all something KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo if asserting backed up Touch ID will “finally be replaced with a facial recognition system” for improved security.

DigiTimes has resources within Apple’s supply chain, but it has a mixed track record at reporting on Apple product plans, so this report should be treated with a proverbial grain of salt. The publication said iPhones with iris scanning capabilities wouldn’t launch until 2018.

DigiTimes mentioned a website that stated 2017 iPhone consist of iris scanning skills, but today’s report is based on its sources. The report asserted this year, an affiliate of Apple manufacturer TSMC, Taiwan-based supplier Xintec, would start production of iris-recognition chips.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, among the sources of iPhone rumors, considers Apple is leaning toward facial recognition technology instead of iris recognition, dependent on the bio-recognition patents it’s filed. Way back in March 2016 he said the ‘iPhone 8’ would include either iris or decorative recognition.

Kuo said he believes Touch ID will probably ‘finally be replaced with a facial recognition method’ for enhanced security, in line with rumors Apple will remove the Home button, however, if the technical difficulties can’t be overcome, ” he noted a ‘combination of fingerprint and facial recognition’ is yet another possible solution.

Last month, Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri said the ‘iPhone 8’ could include an infrared detector located close to the front-facing camera and recognition technologies. The feature could allow users to control their apparatus for jobs such as adjusting volume with easy gestures.

Lending credence is the trademark of Apple for ‘Iris Engine‘ and the acquisitions of businesses like PrimeSense and Faceshift.

iPhone would not be the first smartphone with an iris scanner, also as Samsung added the technology on its own Galaxy Note7.
DigiTimes stated the ‘iPhone 8’ would enter production earlier than in preceding decades, based on a report from earlier this week.

The trio of iPhone of Apple, including iterative ‘iPhone 7s’ and also ‘iPhone 7s Plus’ versions, are still anticipated to launch in September a year. The ‘iPhone 8’ in particular may cost upwards of $1,000 in the U.S. because of its significant redesign and characteristics that require more costly parts.
